Three devotees of senior guru Gyaneshwar, of Chouli Monastery, in southern India, committed suicide in April so they could “join” the guru, who had killed himself 2 months earlier. Understanding that intrigue can be rife at Hindu monasteries, where great wealth and property assets sometimes lead to deadly disputes, a local police representative said Gyaneshwar ended his life because of “attempts by real estate agents to usurp the monastery’s property in connivance with some monastery disciples who wanted a share of the deal.” (NDTV, 4/8/13) [IT 4.2 2013]
