History and Amenities of La Fonda

Santa Fe is a captivating destination, honored by UNESCO as one of only 19 Creative Cities in the world. No matter what the season, there is always something delightful and intriguing about this 400-year old city. La Fonda on the Plaza is the oldest hotel in the oldest capital city in the United States. La Fonda opened its doors in 1922 and operated as a Fred Harvey Hotel for over 40 years. In 1968 Santa Fe businessman Sam Ballen purchased La Fonda. Under their leadership, major renovations and improvements restored La Fonda to its status as a first-class hotel with a unique history and character.

A new beginning…With a new beginning we are fortunate La Fonda’s new ownership, siblings Jennifer Lea Kimball and Phil Wise, continue with the same family tradition that has made La Fonda such a success over its 93-year history. La Fonda’s well-earned reputation as one of the most distinguished hotels in the country will continue to be the cornerstone of its success.

Location…La Fonda is the only hotel in Santa Fe that is located on the historic Plaza, which is the focal point of the city’s activities and attractions. These include some of the best restaurants in town, great shopping and Santa Fe’s premier museums and galleries. Clients often tell us we have a “built-in spouse program” because there is so much to do right outside our door.

Dining and Entertainment within the Hotel…La Plazuela Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. For the seventh year in a row, we have received the Wine Spectator Award! Our La Fiesta Lounge serves our well-known New Mexico lunch buffet and other great food and drinks throughout the evening as well as offers nightly entertainment. In-room dining is available daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also the French Pastry Shop just off La Fonda’s lobby, which offers delicious breakfast and lunch selections! Our outdoor Bell Tower at La Fonda (open seasonally) serves light fare and full bar including our signature Bell Ringer Margarita from the afternoon until sunset (best views in town).

Our sleeping rooms and function space have ambiance and charm. La Fonda’s 180 newly renovated sleeping rooms and suites feature craftsmanship and artwork that reveals and honors our rich and storied past.

In addition, we are pleased to announce that La Fonda has received its confirmation as a four diamond property for the third year in a row, which also speaks to the hotel’s long-standing tradition and stature as the only hotel on the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Santa Fe is among the most prominent leisure destinations in the nation, as a capital city of New Mexico, La Fonda is in good company.

Our 20,112 square feet of meeting and banquet space features unique artwork, kiva fireplaces, hand-carved beams, and dramatic chandeliers.
