News Summaries from ICSA PeriodicalsWilliam A. Lewis, son of the late House of Judah leader William L. Lewis (senior), says his father was not guilty of the 1983 beating death of a 12-year-old boy in the group’s Michigan camp, allegedly because the boy did not do his chores. The elder Lewis, who was cleared of state charges in the death, was later convicted of slavery in federal court, as was his son. Lewis senior said at the time, “We haven’t done anything wrong because God tells you to put the rod on the slavery child, and that’s what we were doing.” Lewis the younger, now 68—who served two years in prison on the charge—believes his father was a prophet, and that the House of Judah dissolved because of followers’ conflicts with his father. The House of Judah, he says, was not a cult. “The cult is religion—not the House of Judah. The cult is religion. That’s your cult.” (Mlive, 6/28/13) [IT 5.1 2014]
