The Masons, believing that the public and potential members do not know much about their organization—save to think that it’s very secretive—now have Facebook pages, Web sites, and TV ads, all calculated in part to reverse falling membership—from 4 million in 1959 to 2 million today, but now attracting younger men, and growing. (Wall Street Journal, 10/11/11[sic]) [IT 4.1 2013]
The Masons want the public to know that they are neither a cult nor a religious organization but a law abiding, decentralized, charitable fraternity of some two million individuals worldwide that has included among its members George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Gerald Ford, and Supreme court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Some of the continuing suspicion of the Masons, who still perform secret rituals, may stem from the long-standing hostility of the Roman Catholic Church. [csr 8.3 2009)

Khalid Kelly, a former Dublin alter boy, now living in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, recently told a reporter that he is undergoing training as a jihadist and looks forward to going to Afghanistan to fight against the British and the Americans. His three-year-old son, Osama, lives on Britain. After working as a nurse in Saudi Arabia, with “a very cushy lifestyle,” as he put it, Kelly was introduced to radical Islam while serving time in a Saudi jail for bootlegging. Back in Britain, he joined radical Islamic groups and worked to recruit young Muslims to jihad. He hopes Pakistan emulates Iraq, with “beheadings and kidnappings. . . We are told to terrorize the enemies of Islam. The world will become a dangerous place. Everybody had better start embracing Islam or people will start flying planes into buildings again.”Charles Manson/Leslie Van Houten  The California parole board has refused, for the fifteenth time, to release Leslie Van Houten, convicted in two of the murders committed by Charles Manson’s cult in 1969. The two-member panel praised Van Houton’s spotless disciplinary record, and her work tutoring fellow inmates, adding that they would review her case once again next year. [csr 5.3 2006]
